LARGE SWELL FILLED IN OVERNIGHT SUPPLYING COMPETITORS WITH CLASSIC BACKDOOR AND PIPELINE BARRELS

February 1, 2018 – Waves and competition heated up for Day 2 at the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro with a new solid swell which provided high-scoring and high-impact heats. We saw the first perfect 10 of the event by Hawaii’s Finn McGill and numerous eight and nine-point rides from a variety of the competitors.

The Volcom Last Chance Qualifier (VLCQ) ran just after Round 2 and featured some of Pipeline’s best barrel riders and legends of the sport which included Derek Ho, Gavin Beschen, Dave Wassel, Kalani Chapman, Jamie O’Brien, Takayuki Wakita, and Jonah Morgan, along with Puerto Rico’s Mauro Diaz who packed a huge Backdoor closeout in the dying seconds of the heat. But it was Pipeline local Jamie O’Brien who stole the show with a 9.33 steamer-of-a-wave at Backdoor. Jamie, who won the very first Volcom Pipe Pro back in 2010, is fired up to enter the main event and compete against friends like John John Florence who he’s battled with in memorable heats at this event.

The waves continued to pound the beach throughout the day as we finished through Heat 4 of Round 3. Tomorrow looks like another solid day of surf as the swell holds and conditions look favorable, so check back at Volcom.com/pipepro at 7:15am HST for the official call!
