A Candid Photo Journal: Indo Boat Trip With Volcom Surf Team

Over the holidays we released a new surf edit (watch it here) featuring a few of our colorful team riders surfing in Indonesia, all of whom absolutely shred in their own unique ways. We have Ryan Burch who takes the high line, creating a unique approach to waves and style which transcends generations, Ozzie Wright who flies down the wave with long rainbow floaters, huge airs, and signature hand-painted surfboards, the electric high-flyin’ Brazilian, Yago Dora, the all-or-nothing rowdy Aussie, Mitch Coleborn, the East Coast frothing grom, Pat Schmidt, and the lone comedic Frenchman, Charly Quivront. While each dude is quite different from one another, in the water and on land, they all share the same stoke and passion for surfing and the search for good times.

Tom Carey, Volcom veteran photographer, wanted to load up the boat with disposable cameras to catch the other side of the trip. The side that displays the non-surfing shenanigans, adventures, and antics of the team. Cameras were scattered throughout the boat for anyone who wanted to wind up the plastic box and snap something worth capturing. Hundreds of film photos were taken at random by the photographers and some of the team dudes, and by the end of the trip, that winding sound haunted everyone’s dreams (I can hear it now). Once we returned home and developed a few dozen of the disposable cameras down at the local market, we pulled some favorites. Take a scroll below and check out this behind-the-scenes, candid photo journal from our Indonesian boat trip.

CAMERAS: Disposables!!

Ozzie is like 38 going on 19. The biggest kid I know.
Ryan Burch beat the heat. When the sun is out and the wind is light, you really start to feel it.
Ryan Burch is one of a kind. He gets these crazy eyes and has a little dark side that I like about him.
Not sure what Yago is doing here, but you're always looking for something fun to do on these trips to break up the monotony.
Pat Schmidt is from New Jersey and often wakes up in the Jersey Shore with that finger.
Charly Quivront, the little French punk of the trip surfed circles around everyone. He might have held the Bintang record for the trip. Or at least the Euro record.
